"As preparation for this perspective, I took a series of photographs looking across the Brisbane River. I am often asked to paint the usually muddy green colored river as a strong blue. On this particular overcast day, the river looked like a beaten grey-green lead. The color was so subtle and beautiful I resolved to carry it throughout the composition. I was very much influenced by the work of Richard Ferrier, whose well controlled, subtly chosen watercolor washes emphasize that color does not always have to be bold to be beautiful.''
